We have more than enough when we have Christ

Numbers 31:32-47 (ESV)
Now the plunder remaining of the spoil that the army took was 675,000 sheep, [33] 72,000 cattle, [34] 61,000 donkeys, [35] and 32,000 persons in all, women who had not known man by lying with him. [36] And the half, the portion of those who had gone out in the army, numbered 337,500 sheep, [37] and the LORD's tribute of sheep was 675. [38] The cattle were 36,000, of which the LORD's tribute was 72. [39] The donkeys were 30,500, of which the LORD's tribute was 61. [40] The persons were 16,000, of which the LORD's tribute was 32 persons. [41] And Moses gave the tribute, which was the contribution for the LORD, to Eleazar the priest, as the LORD commanded Moses. [42] From the people of Israel's half, which Moses separated from that of the men who had served in the army- [43] now the congregation's half was 337,500 sheep, [44] 36,000 cattle, [45] and 30,500 donkeys, [46] and 16,000 persons- [47] from the people of Israel's half Moses took one of every 50, both of persons and of beasts, and gave them to the Levites who kept guard over the tabernacle of the LORD, as the LORD commanded Moses.

The percentage of the plunder given to Eleazar the priest works out to be 0.2%. The percentage of the plunder given to the Levites was 2%. So what is the total percentage of the plunder that God took of the plunder? Only 2.2%. God surely fought the battle for Israel, and won the victory for them, but He only keeps 2.2% and gives the 97.8% to Israel. God is a generous God.

And is the 2.2% for Himself? No. God owns cattle on a thousand hills. All the earth and everything in it is His. He needs nothing from man. God's glory is in giving, not receiving. But what's the 2.2% for? It is for the servants of God, the priesthood. It is certain that the tribe of Levi received not any of the plunder besides this 2.2%, for they were not counted among the army of God. But God gives a little that His servants may have enough to get by, so that they may at least have a little reward among the children of Israel, that they may not feel left out.

Here we learn a lesson. 2.2% is how much the believers in Christ are given of this world. Like the Levites, we don't have any inheritance in the kingdoms of men. Our inheritance is God Himself. He is our portion. Jesus Christ is our 100%. God gives us just enough for us to get by, so that we don't be overcome with grief or hopelessness. But God will not give us more, lest we be tempted, and begin to put our trust in uncertain riches and the things of this world. God will not starve us, but give us food to eat, but He will also give us little enough so that we may put our hope in the coming Kingdom of God. We remember what Paul said:
1 Corinthians 15:19 (ESV)
If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.

Why are we to be pitied of all people? Because we have so little. If we're not all poor in riches, we're all surely poor in spirit, as beggars. In this life we live on 2.2%, just enough money, joy and blessing and hope to survive, while the world and unbelievers enjoy a feast with the abundance of the 97.8%. Read how the ungodly prosper in this world:
Psalm 73:3-12 (KJV)
For I was envious at the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. [4] For there are no bands in their death: but their strength is firm. [5] They are not in trouble as other men; neither are they plagued like other men. [6] Therefore pride compasseth them about as a chain; violence covereth them as a garment. [7] Their eyes stand out with fatness: they have more than heart could wish. [8] They are corrupt, and speak wickedly concerning oppression: they speak loftily. [9] They set their mouth against the heavens, and their tongue walketh through the earth. [10] Therefore his people return hither: and waters of a full cup are wrung out to them. [11] And they say, How doth God know? and is there knowledge in the most High? [12] Behold, these are the ungodly, who prosper in the world; they increase in riches.

Why does God give so much blessing to the wicked? Why do they have more than their heart can wish, while the godly die not having received the things they believed for? Why do they prosper in the world, while God's children are like sheep given to the slaughter every day. Why does God show so much compassion to them, that they are not like troubled like other men who put their whole trust in God? Indeed Christians are like Lazarus who sat with sores at the gate, desiring to be fed at the crumbs of the rich man:
Luke 16:19-21 (KJV)
There was a certain rich man, which was clothed in purple and fine linen, and fared sumptuously every day: [20] And there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, which was laid at his gate, full of sores, [21] And desiring to be fed with the crumbs which fell from the rich man's table: moreover the dogs came and licked his sores.
Not only did the Lazarus have painful sores, he was poor, hungry, and despised even by stray dogs. Such is the life of the Christian, while the unbelieving world as a rich man feasts with his belly full. But why? Because we have been given much grace of eternal life. We deserve to suffer eternally the pain that Lazarus suffered in his lifetime. We deserve to have an eternity of pain, shame and hunger. But God has granted to us by His mercy an eternity in paradise through the death of Jesus Christ His Son. Therefore God grants to us only 2.2%, like crumbs that fall off the rich man's table. His amazing grace is sufficient for us. God is our inherence, and He alone is our portion. We have the Lord of Lords and the King of Kings as our God. Must we complain because of our sores? Must we be dissatisfied with the crumbs by which we get by? No. These are enough for us. We know that in heaven we shall feast with Jesus Christ. We know that in heaven is no pain, curse nor sorrow. Our Kingdom where we shall rule as kings is not the kingdoms of men. It has been prepared, without hands, and it shall come upon the earth. There we shall reign, but not here. Then we shall be as He is, but not now. This is our hope that saves us.

Why then do the unbelievers prosper in this world? There prosperity in this lifetime is their portion. Their lot is not in the next life. Their paradise is now. Their pleasure and blessings in this life are the only mercies God has given unto them. God, knowing their end in eternal torment and cursedness, grants them abundant life now in His lovingkindness. Of course, God does not leave them without a witness. God sends them His messengers that they may turn from their wickedness; God sends them diseases and disasters in His providence that they may turn from trusting in their possessions and riches; God gives them sorrow and pain that they may realize that they can't trust in themselves. God does all these things, that they may be challenged to live the life of Lazarus for the sake of Jesus Christ. But if they do not turn, and if they do not forsake all the good they have for Christ, it shall come upon them what came upon the rich man:
Luke 16:22-26 (KJV)
And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried; [23] And in hell he lift up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom. [24] And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. [25] But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. [26] And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.

Let Abraham's words sink down in our ears: remember that you in your LIFETIME received your good things, and in Lazarus' lifetime he received bad things, he is NOW comforted and you are now tormented. The question is this: do you want to receive your good things after you die, or do you want to receive good things NOW and go to hell? Do you want to be comforted now, or do you want to be tormented forever? Are we willing to forsake receiving good things in this life, willingly take up the cross, live on 2.2%, and invest for a good eternity? Or are we going to be fools who enjoy pleasures of sin for a season an receive the wrath of God for an eternity. That is the choice we are to make. This is the tree of life, or the tree of death.

Let us believers be satisfied with the little that we have. But not only that, let us realize why God gives us so little. It is because God is our everything. Jesus Christ is our all in all. He is our eternal life. He is our Shelter, He is our bread of life, and it is He who gives us the water that quenches all thirst. He is our one pearl of great price. He is the treasure that we found in the field. He is our Brother, Friend, Teacher and the Husband. He is one with God our Father. He is our all in all. Who cares if we only have crumbs compared to the meals that the world has? Their prosperity is ultimately their judgment and their poison. Their riches to them are like baits we spread to catch and kill vermin. Let us consider their hopeless end, and our joyful end. Let us remember that we have invested our lives and buried our lives with Christ. Though we are dead, we shall be revealed in due time, like full grown wheat at harvest time. Hallelujah to God who has given us His own Life for us. We have more than enough when we have Jesus Christ our Lord. Praise be to God.
