This is my beloved Son, hear ye Him!

Numbers 27:18-23 (KJV)
And the Lord said unto Moses, Take thee Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the spirit, and lay thine hand upon him; [19] And set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation; and give him a charge in their sight. [20] And thou shalt put some of thine honour upon him, that all the congregation of the children of Israel may be obedient. [21] And he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall ask counsel for him after the judgment of Urim before the Lord : at his word shall they go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he, and all the children of Israel with him, even all the congregation. [22] And Moses did as the Lord commanded him: and he took Joshua, and set him before Eleazar the priest, and before all the congregation: [23] And he laid his hands upon him, and gave him a charge, as the Lord commanded by the hand of Moses.

God commands Moses to place Joshua before Eleazar and all the congregation and to charge, impart some of Moses' honour and to ask counsel through Eleazar. Why does God command this? It is quite evident, first of all, that none may rebel against Joshua's rule. Moses was to do this in the sight of all, that all may see that the authority of leader has been passed from Moses to Joshua.

This is a parable of Christ's inauguration as Lord in the sight of God and all His witnesses. All authority in heaven and earth has been given unto the risen Christ, the full honour of God the Father given unto His Son, who has obeyed Him unto death. Jesus Christ is God over all the earth. Now shall He lead His people out of the world into His Kingdom, and cause them to inherit the land.

What was the reason that Moses gave honour to Joshua in the sight of all? That all may Israel may be obedient. Then what was the reason why God gave ALL His glorious honour to His Son? That we may obey Him:
Matthew 17:5 (KJV)
While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.
God no longer needs to speak, for He has spoken what He needs to say to the world: "Jesus Christ is My beloved Son. Hear Him!" We must then hear what Jesus our Lord speaks and obey Him. For God does not give His honour with measure unto Him. God has no limit of the height of His honour. He gives this Honour to His Son. Therefore when we glorify His Son, we glorify God.
Eleazar the priest, who shall ask counsel for him after the judgement of Urim before the Lord. God commands that Joshua ask counsel from Eleazar. As one commentator rightly mentions, Moses never enquired a high priest, for he himself had ordained Aaron the first High Priest in the order of Levitical priesthood. But now, Joshua is to humble himself, and ask counsel in difficult matters from the High Priest.

We know that for us we have a High Priest upon whose heart is the Urim and the Thummin, lights and perfections. He is Light and Perfection Himself, in whom is no shadow of turning. We are to enquire God in all judgments through Jesus Christ our Lord. Jesus Christ is the Light through which we see light. Even Christ Himself enquired the Father for counsel, and does nothing apart from God. How shall do we anything apart from Jesus Christ our High Priest.
The difference between Jesus and Joshua is that Jesus never enquired a High Priest. He Himself was the High Priest. He Himself was the word from God, for He was God's Son sent on a mission. He requires no counsel. His name is Counsellor. Salvation was His, Father and the Holy Spirit's idea. He Himself is the Judge. God has committed ALL judgement to Him.

He only gives instructions and commandments. He will not receive them. He doesn't need to, nor will he, for He is God. He takes no advice from angels, let alone sinful human beings. He never learns anything, He is only teacher all the time. He has never grown, He has always been the same yesterday, today and forever. He is only guide all the time, never a followed any other being.
Isaiah 40:13-14 (KJV)
Who hath directed the Spirit of the Lord , or being his counsellor hath taught him? [14] With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and shewed to him the way of understanding?
Let us then, wonder at this greatness of the Lord, and rather listen to Him. We do well to learn from Him always. We will never outgrow being a learner, for God knows all things. We know nothing. Let us as Job hold our mouth and repent unto dust.

Moses does as God commands, and hands over His position as leader to Joshua. This is a picture of the law given now over to the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Law was the schoolmaster that chastised us and brought us over to the grace of God. The law can't take us over to heaven. The law is earthly, designed to show us our inability to do anything that God requires properly. The law showed us only how broken our functionality to be godly is. We're like a broken car, which are given the owner's manual. It only shows us how malfunctioning we are. Read what Paul said:
Romans 7:18 (KJV)
For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
We have lost the functionality to be good, because we have been broken apart from a relationship with God when Adam sinned. We don't know how to do good. It is missing. There is a knowledge that we must do good, but there is no action.

That is why we are dependent on the grace of God. That is why we need Jesus Christ to carry us to the promised land. As Joshua, Christ is the one who has been there before us. He has prepared a place for us. He will come back to carry us into His bosom. We need faith in Him everyday that we may be given the confidence of heaven in Him. Let us believe in Christ's beautiful heart, and wait upon Him, that He may carry us in this journey, closer and closer to the promised land.

One thing to learn here of Moses. He humbly stepped down His role as leader. He obeyed God in all God's house. He didn't hold a grudge against God or hate Joshua. He desired not the position as leader, but desired more the will of God. Just as Christ desired the will of God than His own dignity, and thus threw away His own life for us. Let us learn from Moses' great heart.
