Numbers 28:7-8 (KJV)
And the drink offering thereof shall be the fourth part of an hin for the one lamb: in the holy place shalt thou cause the strong wine to be poured unto the Lord for a drink offering. [8] And the other lamb shalt thou offer at even: as the meat offering of the morning, and as the drink offering thereof, thou shalt offer it , a sacrifice made by fire, of a sweet savour unto the Lord .
Strong wine to be poured unto the Lord. There is sense, in these daily drink offerings to the Lord, of self-denial. It signifies giving up of worldly joy and careless, drunken living, for the cause of God. The drink offering was to be poured with each lamb in the morning and evening. When we consider the horrific suffering of Christ for our sins, we cannot but pour out our lives in self-denial unto the Lord. This is what Paul did:
Philippians 2:17 (ESV)
Even if I am to be poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrificial offering of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all.
Many times in the bible strong wine and drink is mentioned as something to be avoided. Read some of these verses:
Proverbs 20:1 (KJV)
Wine is a mocker, strong drink is raging: and whosoever is deceived thereby is not wise.
Isaiah 24:9 (KJV)
They shall not drink wine with a song; strong drink shall be bitter to them that drink it.
Ephesians 5:18 (KJV)
And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit;
In scripture, strong drink is largely forbidden to be drunk. But instead, it is to be poured out to the Lord in the fire. It is the similar idea with the fat, which is delicious, but was commanded to be offered up by fire, for it was harmful. What is the scripture teaching us here, but that we must avoid anything that intoxicated us that which is not the Spirit of God. It is not just wine, but hobbies, relationships, worldly investments that intoxicate us and makes us drunk with this world. We are to pour it out upon the fire that which burnt up Christ on Calvary. We are to give them up.
In fact, Paul speaks as though his life itself is the wine. He says HE is to be poured out as a drink offering. We must give up our own life upon the altar of Jesus Christ:
Luke 9:24-25 (KJV)
For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it. [25] For what is a man advantaged, if he gain the whole world, and lose himself, or be cast away?
This is the drink offering of our lives, to lose our lives for Jesus' sake. We are rejecting enjoyable lives and having the world and being intoxicated by the life as the world knows it, and throwing it away upon the fire that burnt Christ. We choose to suffer with Him, rather than choosing the pleasures of sin for a season.
We do this, because Jesus did this. Jesus poured out His own live for us. He gave up eternal enjoyment in heaven with His Father. To become a man was a sacrifice. To suffer as a man the physical sufferings was a great self-denial for our Maker. To suffer scorn from His own creation was condescending. To serve His own servants by washing their feet was a denial of pride. But to deny sweet fellowship with the Father for us was the biggest denial for us. If Christ had nothing (He did have nothing) He would have been joyful because of His continual communion with the Father. But to deny Himself of even this joy, that we might have this joy, is amazing. He denied Himself His only rightful joy, for us. Shall we not then deny our even rightful joys for other's joy? This is how Paul and the Apostles lived. They gave up their own joy, that others may have joy. They did it because Christ was living in them. This Christ is also living in us.
We give up our joy, that Christ may be pleased the more to dwell in us. To rejoice in something is to worship it. Christ cannot be pleased when we hold the strong wines and don't let go. We must give them up, that in the giving up of it, God may be pleased:
Psalm 63:3 (KJV)
Because thy lovingkindness is better than life, my lips shall praise thee.
God's love make us want to throw away our lives to Him. Jesus Christ is God's Love. Whoever loses his life for Jesus Christ's, His Love's, sake shall find Everlasting Life. His Love is better than whole the world. His love is better than strong drinks. God's love is able to satisfy more than things that intoxicate. We were meant to be intoxicated with the gracious Love of God. We were meant to be filled with the Holy Spirit.
How do we experience more of God's love? By hating other things. We can't make Him love us more, but we will come to believe in God's love more, if we give Him the only place in us.
Revelation 12:11 (KJV)
And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.
When we love death with Christ more than our lives, we will overcome the devil. When we love the death of Christ more than our own lives, we will overcome the devil. Our lives have been bought with the price of Jesus' blood. Therefore we do not exist to love our own lives but to love God over our lives:
Romans 8:12 (KJV)
Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.
Let us live then, after the Holy Spirit, who will raise us raise us from the dead. Let us live in service to God, not in service to our own selves. This is the offering of our lives unto God. Let us be poured out unto the Lamb who has been slain for us.
